Background

Asia Source II is a followup to Asia Source I organised in January 2005 (Bangalore, India). Asia Source I was an eight day technology camp for 60 participants from the voluntary sector and 60 information technologists from 20 countries from South Asia and South East Asia in partnership organised by Tactical Technology Collective, Mahiti and the International Open Source Network. This event was supported by Hivos, Open Society Institute and APDIP-UNDP. This page covers the Aims of Asia Source II; FOSS in South Asia and South East Asia; and FOSS and the NGO sector. Venue

Asia Source II is a community building event - in the spirit of free and open source software - participants will be expected to share resources, contribute to activities and the running of the event. The event will be held at Yawitra Resort at Sukabumi.

According to the Wikipedia "Sukabumi is a city and regency in the highlands of West Java, Indonesia, about 80 km (50 miles) south of Jakarta. Located at an altitude of about 600 meters (2000 feet), the city is a minor hill station resort, with a cooler climate than the surrounding lowlands". "Suka Bumi" in Bahasa Indonesia means "Like Earth".

  • What is Asia Source II?

Asia Source II is a eight day gathering to be held in January 2007 that will bring together nearly 100 NGO and SME information and technology support professionals working at the local level across South Asia and South East Asia. Asia Source II will provide participants with a range of practical and hands-on sessions aimed at increasing the use of Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) amonst the NGO and SME in the region. The intention is to move beyond conceptual discussions of the benefits of FOSS into practical skillsharing between those working with NGOs.

  • What are the topics?

During the eight days, participants will be challenged to both share their skills and learn from others. Sessions will take the form of structured and formalised sessions.

Participants

Asia Source II seeks to build the skills and networks of those in the region who are working within NGO and SME sector. The event will bring together a balance of people, from the more technical to the more content oriented. These range from software developers and system administrators, to trainers, consultants and FOSS advocates, as well as technology/NGO project managers, and tech-savvy activists/NGO workers. Applicants should be proficient in desktop use of technology, have been involved in technology projects before, and be aware of FOSS. Asia Source II is particularly aimed at those NGOs who are working on social justice and civic rights issues, i.e. human rights, ethnic minorities, women/children, disabled, anti-corruption, public health and environment.

Advisory Group

Asia Source II Advisory Group consists of Onno Purbo, Partha Pratim Sarkar, Balthas Seibold, Christiane Weber, Alvin Marcelo and Pia Waugh.

The Advisory Group members perform two important functions. They select the participants from the pool of applications. They also help the organisers design the curriculum and content for Asia Source II.
